Here we are looking at a basic Songo pattern. This is Cuban rhythm that took influence from more traditional Cuban music and evolved it to produce this pattern that was intended for a hybrid kit set up using timbales, cowbells, woodblocks and other percussion items, mixed in with the bass drum, snare and hi-hat.
This is a basic pattern and just serves to introduce this style to you. Of course, once you know it you can draw on this influence and bring that rhythmic flavour into your drumming in other genres.
Either way, the Songo drum beat is great fun to play and well worth the effort. As always, learn it to the stage that you can add fills to it and develop variations of the groove, and then try playing along to some authentic Songo music.
Downloaded the sheet music HERE and watch the video below and then get playing the paradiddle groove.
