This drum blog is looking at a little fill which is heavily influenced by the kind of players that are often described as gospel drummers. The term ‘gospel chops’ is often used in drum circles when describing some of the fast, broken type of fills that those drummers use.
When I say broken, I mean the use of parts of rudiments, and changing of limbs in unusual places which creates quite quirky, unnatural phrases that sound great when learned slowly and then brought up to speed.
The drummer that particularly influenced this fill was Aaron Spears. Aaron Spears is an excellent drummer who is plays with such artists as Usher
